England on Four Wheels – Advice for Driving in England

If you really wish to see England and everything it has to offer, the ideal way is by car. Driving through England means traveling at your own speed and choosing your itinerary yourself. This itinerary gives a trip from your cheap hotel in Brighton to England’s North East, and this should have your mouth watering. I’ve chosen this trip due to the way the landscape shifts, from sea to sea and city to village.

1st Day – Begin in the southern coastal area of Brighton. Brighton is a wonderful place with a Pavilion, funfair and pier. Exit your hotel in the morning and head along the coast through the A27. An ideal area to hold up to have lunch would be Portsmouth, that has a famous Spinnaker Tower along with all the fantastic eateries at Gunwharf Quays. Get back on the highway and take it till Southampton, from which you’ll change to the A36. The A36 can take you up to the historic area of Salisbury, with its impressive medieval castle.

Day Two – Leave Salisbury on the A360 then get onto the A303. On this route you’ll be lead to a site all must see once, the mysterious and impressive Stonehenge. From here, you’ll travel west, through Warminster, and get into Bath. Bath has some of the remains of the Roman baths, consisting of England’s finest classical architecture. After this, go on the A46 and A433 north until you end up in the Cotswolds. Tetbury and Cirencester are two towns that have a lot of pleasant motels and budget hotel chains for a night’s stay.

3rd Day – On this day, you’ll take a trip to Coventry. While you’re going, you’ll stop and view two of England’s greatest sights. First, you’ll take the A429 and rest along the way at Stratford-Upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare. Head north on the A46, and you can stop at the immaculate Warwick’s castle. Be sure to allow time to see the beautiful cathedral in Coventry.

4th Day – From exiting your hotel in Coventry, drive north on the M69 and after this the M1. You can stop at the strange attraction of Chesterfield’s crooked spire. After this, head west up to the tiny town of Bakewell, located in the Peak District. An additional option is to head north to the lively area of Sheffield, where you can find a range of excellent hotels.

5th Day – Continue heading north on the M1 until you pass Leeds. From a short stop there, take the A64. This will bring you to the classic town of York, where you can be shopping in the labyrinthine streets full of old style shops, view the Minister and walk along the old city walls. York has a lovely park-and-ride service for visitors, as the city really doesn’t give a lot in the way of parking spaces. If you’ve still got some daylight, you might head northeast up to Pickering, well-known for the North York Motors steam railway which you can ride. Otherwise, you can stay at any of the wonderful UK hotel chains in York.

Day Six – Now, you’ll be getting to the coastline. Take the A170 and soon you’ll get to Scarborough, a rustic fishing town right on the coast. Scarborough contains an old castle that’s right on the headlands, and this is a wonderful area to hold up for a seafood lunch. Travel on the A171 and soon you’ll get to the beautiful cliffside town called Robin’s Hood Bay. Stay in any of the sweet quaint hotels at the hill’s top; the streets at the level of the sea are quite narrow, so driving down there is not recommended.

Day Seven – Keep on the A171 along the coast and soon you’ll be at Whitby. It’s an attractive town with a bustling harbor, little side streets along with an old gothic abbey. You’ve reached the end of the journey! Now, you can take your car to the local branch of the car rental agency, or you can drive back to Brighton and enjoy the the sights on the travel back!

A Brief History of Burton on Trent

Burton upon Trent, also known as Burton-on-Trent or purely Burton, is a sizeable city spanning the River Trent East Staffordshire, England. The people of Burton are generally known as “Burtonians”.

Burton is known worldwide for its brewing tradition, residence to more than 12 breweries in its heyday. It at first grew up around Burton-on-Trent Abbey, the monastery of Saint Modwen, and had expanded right into a industrious market city by the early modern era. While Burton’s great bridge over the Trent was in poor repair by the early 1500s it served as “a comen passage backward and forward many countries to the grett releff and comfort of travellyng individuals”, in response to the abbot. The town, which had an projected population of 64,449 in keeping with the 2001 Census, lies inside the Nationwide Forest.

There is some confusion as to whether Burton on Trent is located within the West Midlands or the East Midlands, even though all the town centre is southwest of the River Dove, which forms the Derbyshire/Staffordshire border. This is in all probability as a result of it was formerly inside the East Midlands Utility (electricity and gas) areas, and has Derbyshire postcodes (DE13-DE15).

For hundreds of years, Burton on Trent has been connected with the brewing industry. This is owing to the quality of the local water, which accommodates a high proportion of dissolved salts, principally caused by the gypsum within the surrounding hills. This allowed a larger proportion of hops, a natural preservative, to be incorporated in the beer, thus allowing the beer to be transported further afield. A great deal of the open land within and in the area of the town is protected against chemical treatment  to help preserve this water superiority.

The opening of the River Trent Navigation on the start of the 18th century allowed Burton beer to be shipped to Hull, and to Prussia and on to the Baltic Sea, in addition to to London the place it was for sale in 1712. Several breweries opened within the latter half of the 18th century to seize advantage of this trade. The Napoleonic blockade brought this to a stop, resulting in an amount of consolidation and a redirection of the business to London and Lancashire via canals. When Burton on trent brewers succeeded in duplicating the Pale ale created in London, the advantage of the water’s qualities allowed the progress of the trade of Burton India Pale Ale (an ale specially brewed to keep for the length of the prolonged sea journey to India). The construction of rail links to Liverpool enabled brewers to export their beer throughout the British Empire.

Burton on trent came to dictate this commerce, and at its pinnacle one quarter of all beer offered in Britain was produced in Burton. In the latter part of the nineteenth century there was a development in native breweries, supplemented by outside brewing businesses shifting into the area so that greater than 30 breweries had been recorded in 1880. Nevertheless at the beginning of the twentieth century there was a drop in beer sales causing a lot of breweries to fail, unhelped by the Liberal government’s anti-drinking attitude. This time however, no new markets were found and as a result the breweries shrank by closure and consolidation from 20 in 1900 to eight in 1928. An extra course of mergers and buy-outs resulted in 3 main breweries remaining by 1980: Bass, Ind Coopes and Marstons. In the current day, just Burton Bridge brewery stays as an unbiased brewer.

The town’s association with the brewing trade is widely known by a statue of the Burton Cooper, which is currently located within the Coopers Square shopping centre in the centre of the town.

Travel Reservations…Plan Ahead

If you are planning on traveling by air somewhere soon it would be a good idea to reserve your tickets ahead of time. I know that sounds like obvious advice but many people don’t do it and pay the price for not reserving far enough ahead. To get cheap tickets you have to keep your eyes open for the deals and that means continually scouring the ticket sites for the deals. Many deals are seasonal and many deals are driven by competition, that is one airline lowers their fares and others follow. Sometimes these generate air fare wars.

So your air travel reservations should be made out far enough so that you can take advantage of the seasonal fares etc. There is a radio show hosted by Clark Howard that is a good place to listen to as he gives the lowest fares to various places weekly on his show.

Even business class air travel can be gotten a reduced rates if you look hard enough. The trouble is most business travel is not planned ahead very far to be able to take advantage of some of the offers.

How to Buy Cheap Train Tickets

Train tickets in the UK have been billed as the most expensive in Europe, but that doesn’t have to be the case. With these simple tips you can learn how to buy cheap train tickets:

Buy Two Singles – If you’re booking a return journey the prices displayed on sites like thetrainline.com show prices for return tickets, but if you click on the link ‘two singles could be cheaper’ it will show you the price for the same journey if the tickets are purchased as two singles instead. Quite often the savings are huge, so make sure you always check before deciding which to buy.

Travel Off Peak -  The train industry, like most, works on a supply and demand basis – so the more demand, the higher the price, which is why if you travel at peak time, i.e. commuter time, you’ll pay significantly more than travelling on an off-peak train.  The exact times for peak travel vary depending on the train operating company, but as a rule of thumb if you’re travelling before 9.30am and between 3.30-7pm Monday – Friday it’s peak travel time. Prices drop dramatically by travelling outside these hours.

Book in Advance – In days gone by, it seemed the only way to buy a cheap train ticket was by buying 12 weeks in advance with an Apex, but today things have changed. Yes, the further in advance you purchase the more likely the cheap uk train tickets are to be available, but you can still make big savings even by booking one day in advance. Sign up to ticket alerts from thetrainline.com and they’ll send you an email when the ticket for your journey becomes available – ideal if you’re planning a trip in a couple of months time and want to get the best priced ticket. If you really want to get the cheapest tickets buy as far in advance as you can – not because the price will change, but because the availability of the cheap train tickets will decrease as you get closer to the travel date.

Be Flexible – To buy cheap train tickets you need to balance out the price you’ll pay for the ticket with the time and day you want to travel. If you want to travel from Birmingham to London on a Monday morning at 7am you can buy a ticket in advance for £39.50 while if you travelled around 9am the price for an advanced single is around £17 and travelling at 11am is just £9.50.

Be Adventurous – If you fancy a trip somewhere different and you have a budget you want to stick to and a station you want to travel from you could use thetrainline.com’s Best Fare Finder tool. It shows you the cheapest tickets available on your preferred route, based on your preferred travel date and time, so you can choose which route suits your pocket best.

Be Specific – Open return train tickets tend to be the most expensive, so by specifying your train journey times you can be quids in.

Try an Alternative – Sometimes one route can be served by more than one rail operator, so when booking your tickets look at the journey time and you’ll quite often find that the trains that take the longest will have cheaper train tickets than the fast, direct ones.

Is Rubber Flooring and Ice Hockey Rings A Marriage Made in Heaven?

Ever tried to walk on a hard ground wearing ice skates? Maybe you think when you have been to the ice rink that you have walked on hard flooring, but take a closer look and you will notice that the floor is actually made of rubber.

There are many good reasons for this:

Hard wood flooring would be terribly slippery to walk on in ice skates and so for an ice hockey team it would mean that there are more injuries caused off of the ice, possibly causing your team valuable matches.

Interlocking Rubber Floor tiles and also Rubber flooring rolls is one of the hardest wearing floors known to man. Unlike carpets and wood flooring rubber flooring is pretty much indestructible. This means that when the ice hockey teams are trooping around the stadium they won’t damage the flooring, cause any injuries to themselves or others by falling over ripped parts of flooring.

Every part of the ice rink needs to be covered by rubber flooring. This is for health and safety as it is difficult to walk easily around the arena and falls and trips are likely to happen. Not only does the rubber flooring make balance when walking on the hard surfaces, but if you are to rip and fall, the rubber flooring means you are less likely to injure yourself.

Rubber flooring for ice rinks comes in two different thicknesses. 12mm by 18mm and 120mm by 2440mm. The choice in depth allows for you to protect the area that gets the majority of traffic.

In addition to the safety and durability that Interlocking Rubber Floor tiles and also Rubber flooring rolls offers, it also comes in a variety of colours and effects. This means that as well as your hockey rink being safe, you can ensure that the rink is still stylish making sure that the team spirit is still high.

Rubber flooring is economical, hard wearing and easy to maintain. Keeping an ice rink maintained to a high standard is very difficult as the traffic is heavy on certain areas. Also many of the areas become dirty with litter, spillages and generally being used.

Interlocking Rubber Floor tiles and Rubber flooring rolls are great as it is easy to clean and any spillages are not absorbed through the flooring and so rotting, causing smell and damage the flooring meaning that cleaning can be done in super quick time.

Ice hockey rings and rubber flooring is a match made in heaven and the ice rink would struggle to maintain its appearance without the rubber flooring. Most modern ice rings do now use rubber flooring due to their brilliant endurance qualities and the fact that it is eco friendly. Rubber flooring can be made from recycled rubber and once it has past its long life as a floor, it can be recycled once again.

This clearly demonstrates how Rubber flooring rolls and hockey ice rings are a match made in heaven.

Did you know that some   Rubber Flooring Rolls  are made from recycled auto tires? Taylor Made Custom Golf Clubs – Why Are They the Pro’s Number 1 Choice?

Taylor Made clubs were made in the 1970’s by golf fan Gary Adams. Adams was spending a lot of time on the golf course trying to improve his game, but was frustrated at the traditional Wood clubs that were available. After spending sometime considering what alternatives could be found, he developed the metal wood. Adams released his metal wood at the 1979 PGA merchandise but unfortunately it did not take off as expected. In order to convince golfers to purchase the new club, Adams convinced 47 professional golfers to use his club at that years PGA Tour. After seeing this new ground-breaking club being used by so many professionals, interest grew and sales began to sore, and by 1983, metal was the preferred material for clubs.

After the initial success with the metal wood, Taylor Made clubs fell behind the rest of the competition due to a lack of new innovative ideas to match the metal wood. There was more and more metal woods available on the market from already well established golf manufacturers, and Taylor Made no longer stood out from the crowd. But, in the mid nineties, the Burner Bubble driver was introduced. This used an innovative shaft which helped golfers swing faster without any of the extra effort required with normal drivers. This product firmly set Taylor Made on the golfing worlds map.

Today, Taylor Made is one of the industries undisputed leaders in golf equipment manufacturing and innovative design. They dominate the PGA Tour, as well as most other competitive tours due to their expertise, with their drivers and fairway woods being the club of choice for a large number of professionals. However, due to their wide ranging product line, offering clubs for golfers of all skill levels, Taylor Made clubs are just as favored by novice golfers as they are by the Pro’s.

In 1997, Taylor Made was acquired by Adidas to form TaylorMade-Adidas golf. This move helped to make them one of the largest golf club manufacturers in the world as both companies were amongst the most innovative in their respective fields. A sign of the success of the two companies coming together is the production of their golf apparel range. This includes the development of their ‘Climacool’ performance fabrics used in golfing attire, and the ‘3d fit foam’ in their range of shoes. They have also added golf bags, stands and golf balls to their already extensive range of products. But staying true to their roots of golf club innovation, they recently introduced Moveable Weight Technology in their golf clubs, as well as their new Rescue club which has become a huge hit.

Taylor Made custom golf clubs started off as one product created by an entrepreneurial fan of the game. But after taking a more business minded approach to the product, as well as continuous development of new designs and ideas, Taylor Made has become one of the biggest names in the golfing world. Their track record of success and increasing sales, coupled with their desire to develop new products, has ensured that Taylor Made will be around for a long time to come.

Hybrid Golf Clubs or Utility Clubs

Hybrid golf clubs are just what they sound like. They are a cross between an iron and a wood club. Of course now ‘wood’ clubs are really made of metal. Hybrids are designed to be easier to hit, and they really are. They are shaped more like a wood with smaller and sleeker dimensions. The center of gravity is lower in these clubs allowing for the ball to get a higher trajectory. They also will go through high ruff easier than an iron, so for longer shots out of the ruff they have become the clubs of choice. For these long shots you can choose the 1 hybrid golf club or a 2 hybrid golf club. 2 hybrid golf clubs will hit the ball slightly higher and shorter than the 1 hybrid. They make hybrids all the way down to 9 hybrid club.

There are some manufacturers such as Adams that make a complete set of hybrid clubs. These are very high quality and made from this very highly respected maker. Tom Watson uses Adams clubs, so you can be assured that they are excellent clubs.
