Emergency Department/Room Nursing Learn How Nurses Care for Emergency Room Patients

Patients who end up in the Emergency Department have arrived in a state of distress.  How the room nurse responds to the patient will make a huge difference in how the patient makes it threw a rather scary experience.

Room nursing is largely about being a help to the patient and making the patient feel confident in the abilities of the staff and feel as comfortable as possible.  Another big responsibility of the room nurse is to give the hospital staff important information about the patient.  Also, family members and friends that are with the patient have questions that the nurse needs to address so they also feel comfortable with the treatment their friend or family member is receiving.  If the patient’s supporters are frightened, it will make things worse.

What kinds of abilities should the Room Nurse possess?

The Room Nurse must possess good skills for communication.  The nurse also needs to remain calm at all times.  Part of the nurse’s duties is to gather important information like the patient’s ID, insurance cards and the telephone numbers of their contact person.  A list of any allergies the patient may have and the medications the patient has been taking is information that must be accurate and complete for the attending physician to properly treat the patient.

How does the Emergency Room Nurse make the patient comfortable?

An attentive Room Nurse will bring a level to comfort to the patient while they are awaiting treatment.  A simple cup of water will do a lot to calm the patient as well.  Keeping the patient aware of any changes that may take place will help to calm any fears they are experiencing.

Part of the way the Room Nurse can bring comfort to the patient is to assist them in watching out for their personal belongings.  The Room Nurse has been listening closely to what the patient has said about their health issues and is able to step in on their behalf to explain this to the admitting nurse if the patient has forgotten something.  Sometimes the waiting period before a patient is able to see an attending physician can be lengthy so the Room Nurse is there to keep the patient calm while waiting and then to assist them in explaining their problem to the physician.

What is the Room Nurse doing when the patient is in rooms having tests or procedures?

The Room Nurse waits outside the room during the times the patient is having either a procedure done or some testing.  The Room Nurse will listen to the details of the testing or procedures that need to be done and will explain these to both the patient and their family and friends who are there so everyone knows exactly what is happening.

What other duties will the Room Nurse perform?

The Room Nurse will assist the patient with the discharge paperwork and make sure that the patient signs the papers and will help with getting any prescriptions the patient may need.  After all the processing is completed the Room Nurse will take the patient to the car or taxi and make sure the patient has all their belongings before sending them home.

If the patient needs to be admitted to the hospital the Room Nurse will take care of admitting procedures and assist the patient in getting settled into a room.  This can also include helping the patient make a list to the things they will need to be brought to them from home.
