How Does Drug Rehab Work?

When we see someone struggling with drug addiction, we almost automatically know that we want them to get to a drug rehab center. But, are we even sure that we know what we’re talking about? Do you actually know what happens in a rehab center or have you just heard that addicts need to go there? We hear about people entering rehab all of the time –especially celebrities – and a lot of people seem to have relapses. So, does that mean that rehab isn’t worth it?

In reality, there is no way to put a blanket statement over all rehabilitation centers and say that they are effective or not. The biggest deciding factor that determines if treatment will work or not is the attitude of the addict. Do they know that they have a problem? Are they willing to overcome their addiction? It is true that some people never take rehab seriously and are eventually kicked out for not focusing on healing. But, a vast majority of people actually experience some great benefits from entering rehab.

It is important for us to understand the drug rehab process, in case we ever encounter an addict. The first step in the process is called ‘detoxification’. This is a period where addicts are breaking free from their habit. It is the first few days of the process when their bodies are coming down from the harmful effects of the drugs that they use. This is the stage where they may need medical attention since their bodies will be handling the absence of drugs in different ways.

The next part of the process is diagnosis and therapy. Many addicts suffer from mental disorders, on top of their addictions. Doctors have to recognize all of these problems before they can properly treat the patient. Many times the patient will be suffering from a mental disorder that came about because of their addiction. These illnesses have to be treated at the same time to make sure that the patient heals properly. Therapy helps the patient discover what may be the root of their problems. Many times addicts may have had a painful child hood that they are attempting to compensate for – there are many underlying causes of addiction.

A 12-step program is almost always included in a rehabilitation program. The 12 steps were created by the Alcoholics Anonymous Association and are now a main part of many rehab programs. They provide the addict with a guide of how to go about the healing process. It will lead them to heal themselves and help them attempt to mend broken relationships with others.

Medication and family therapy are often another step in the process. Prescription medication can help an addict fight off cravings for a drug – but doctors need to be careful that an addiction to the prescription drug is not formed. Families also go through therapy to help them deal with the problems that come out of an addiction. If you family is suffering because of an addiction, it is very important that you understand this process and make sure that your loved gets to a treatment center.
